Harvest Bistro: New American; Closter; 252 Schraalenburgh Rd @ Bergenline; 25/24/$54; 201-750-9966; Bistro feel- gorgeous interior feels like a living room, complete with fireplace; The brunch is outstanding- Cheese Fondue available and enough for 3; $25 Prix Fixe menu- 3 courses plus drink is a steal; French food fit for a picky American pallet! The Long Island Duck, and other New-American dishes will win you over; Live music on weekends; Top notch service, good looking crowd. One of Bergen’s best & my fav.

Hungry Peddler: American; Cresskill; 470 Knickerbocker Road @ Grant; 24/22/$28; 201-894-0718; Authentic Pub with gorgeous old-school interior decor featuring Americana heritage pieces in dining room; Super friendly service; Endless menu featuring 10+ entree salads, 13+ chicken, 15+ seafood and dozens of sandwich entrees; Huge portions and always freshly prepared; Prime Rib specials and other steaks; Pizza available; Karaoke on Friday nights at 10pm; Saturday - live music; $2 pints of Labatts all day; Tiki bar outside and outdoor seating available in back; Welcoming atmosphere.

 

EAST RUTHERFORD
 

Park & Orchard: American;  East Rutherford; 240 Hackensack @ Union; 22/16/$40; 201-939-9292; Upscale diner setting – nothing fancy – but great service; The menu is 50 pages long- not quite – but they serve everything; Huge portions; Massive wine list; Asian Stir fries; Healthy options; Cheapo appetizers; Great bargain. Foods of all sorts. Perfect for lunch as well.

Baumgart’s Café: American/ Pan Asian; Englewood; 45 E Palisade @ Dean; 19/14/$27; 201-569-6267; Menu includes food from multiple cuisines; Very good ice cream parlor; Mostly Chinese, Japanese selections; 75+ items on menu; Perfect for families/ kids / quick eats; Inexpensive. Honestly though, not great. On here as it is in my hometown!

 
HACKENSACK
 

Cheesecake Factory: American; Hackensack; 197 Riverside Sq; 20/19/$34; 201-488-0330; One of the longest menus you’ll ever see; Huge portions; Always decent and sometimes excellent; Great for large groups; Extremely popular- come early; Every possible cuisine available. One of the better American chain restaurants.

 

Five Guys: American; Hackensack; 450 Hackensack Av @ Grand; 21/9/$11; 201-343-5489; Burgers and fries! Not much else on the menu in this perfect spot for lunch or take out. Freshest beef; Unbeatable toppings. One of the best chains – great bang for the buck.

 

Stony Hill Inn: American; Hackensack; 231 Polifly Rd @ Mary St; 23/26/$59; 201-342-4085; Dining on a large estate- gorgeous setting; Filled with history; Menu inspired by Italian and French cuisine; High end shi-shi menu items but also many classic favorites like Linguine Carbonara and Shrimp Scampi and Calamari Fra Diavolo over linguine. Multiroom, elegant colonial charm; Wedding central here. Ideal for a special occasion.

 

White Manna: Burgers; Hackensack; 358 River St @ Passaic; 23/7/$17; 201-342-0914; Little more than a pick-up/ drive by hamburger joint but what amazing quality; Been around since 1946; Sliders and steak sandwiches are mouthwatering; Stools to sit and order from; White Castle theme taken to new levels; Sliders with Cheese & Onion are signature.

 
HASBROUCK HEIGHTS
 

Ivy Inn: American; Hasbrouck Heights; 268 Terrace Av @ Kipp; 20/23/$47; 201-393-7699; All kinds of different sorts of dishes on the menu; Seafood to Cajun to French inspired to steaks; Relaxed, casual environment;  Great brunch – well priced; Cozy, almost romantic setting; Has an excellent bar complete with happy hour 4:30-6:30; European cottage house feel; Live Piano music on weekends. Great for lunch.

Not a huge menu selection, however. Early bird specials. Charming with top service.

 

Court Street: American; Hoboken; 61 6th St @ Hudson-Washington; 22/18/$36; 201-795-4515; Incredible Italian/ American menu; Fantastic, inexpensive brunch- pitchers of Bloody’s only $11; Wednesday is Lobster night – 2 for $29; Monday is Prime Rib night; Well priced, giant steaks; Tasty pasta selections; Wine tastings; Something for everyone. Spacious décor.

 

Madison Bar & Grill: America; Hoboken; 1316 Washington Av @ 14th St; 21/19/$36; 201-386-0300; Catering to a hip 20s and 30s crowd at night; Incredible $25 all you can eat Sunday Brunch with a drink included; Neighborhood favorite; Tuesday is ½ priced Martinis; Parking validation; Classic barroom; Great salads; Sliders; Paninis/ Sandwiches and standard American entrees; Laid back place;

 

340 Grill: American/ Seafood; Hoboken; 340 Sinatra Dr @ 3rd-4th St; 21/21/$48;  201-217-3406; More of a scene then a formal restaurant; Excellent date spot for drinks and Martinis; Sexy lounge; Also features a solid New-American menu of mainly grilled selections; Incredible views of NYC if dining outdoors; Validated parking for $50 or more; Great trendy bar; Weekend brunch. Loving the raw bar as well.

Blu: American; Montclair; 554 Bloomfield Ave @ Maple Plaza; 24/17/$47; 973-509-2202; Inventive new American menu; Upscale dining; Owner prepares dishes that create a true dining experience; Next to the restaurant is ‘Next Door’ – more casual version of the same. Delicious appetizers and about 12 entrees.

 

CulinAriane: American; Montclair; 33 Walnut @ Pine St; 26/19/$55; 973-744-0533; Owned by a husband/ wife team who graduated culinary school together 18 years ago; BYO; Always amazing and reliable; Wife was a “Top Chef” contender; Fairly small place room wise; Seasonal outdoor dining- including soft shell crab in Spring/ Summer; Reserve in advance. Short menu.

 

Raymond’s: American; Montclair; 28 Church St @ Park St; 22/18/$28; 973-744-9263; Brunch is flat out amazing here- Mmm French toast; B-L-D American BYO institution; Looks like a soda parlor; Outdoor seating; Wildly popular – long lines for Sunday Brunch; Best for Lunch or Breakfast. Fantastic burgers, sandwiches; Friendly service; Locals rave about it.

Hobby’s Deli: Deli; Newark; 32 Branford Pl @ Halsey; 23/10/$19; 973-623-0410; Load up before a Devils game; Monstrous sized sandwiches; Super-friendly staff, welcoming feel; Soups are incredible; Grilled Cheese; Endless list of sandwich options and platters. Hungry writing this!

Je’s: Southern; Newark; 34 William St @ Halsey; 24/10/$19; 973-623-8848; Southern BBQ; Soul Food institution extremely popular with locals; Corn Bread, Mac n Cheese and Sweet Tea are amazing; The chicken is flat out awesome- Fried Chicken at its best; Hole in the wall, though, with no décor & an iffy neighborhood. Extremely friendly service; Open 8am – 7:30pm. Packed on Sundays.

Bobby’s Burger Palace: American; Paramus; 610 Bergen Town Ctr; 20/15/$19; 201-368-7001; Owned by famed chef Bobby Flay; Casual burgers and shakes – but WHAT a burger! Ten different varieties. Also serves Grilled cheese. Extremely casual, putting Fuddruckers to shame!

 

Chakra: American; Paramus; 144 Rt 4 E @ Arcadian; 20/26/$53; 201-556-1530; Stunning décor and interior made for impressing a date; Asian fusion/ American cuisine; Romantic with a large selection of fancy cocktails; Palm trees add to the serene feel; There is a lounge as well;

 

Grand Lux: American; Paramus; 1 Garden St Plaza Mall; 20/22/$31; 201-909-0399; Might be 200 items on the menu; Similar to Cheesecake factory in style/ theme but slightly fancier; Huge variety of food and drinks; Fun time for a relaxed family dinner or lunch. Great Martinis and cocktails. Actually an idea bar scene for a break from shopping or a liquid lunch with bar food.

 

Napa Valley: American; Paramus; 1146 Garden State Plaza @ Rt 4/17; 20/20/$47; 201-845-5555; As name implies, they celebrate wine; Wine country inspired menu;  From burgers, to chicken and fish dishes to salads- something for everyone and mostly healthy; Extensive wine list; Great brunch- probably your best bet; Kind of an eclectic feel. In the Mall itself.

 
PARK RIDGE
 
Esty Street: American; Park Ridge; 86 Spring Valley Rd @ Fremont; 24/19/$57; 201-307-1515;  New American seasonal menu; Décor replicates a library- formal-ish feel; Serious dining and you will be taken care of. Soft Shell Crab appetizer looks amazing.  Brunch menu and a nice bar. Sophisticated-cool.

Dress nicely. Short menu but everything is expertly prepared.

Gazelle Café & Grill: American; Ridgewood; 11 Godwin Av @ Franklin; 21/18/$36; 201-689-9689; High end New American cuisine- for the health conscious; Whole grain pasta used; Dishes are tasty- but healthy; BYO; Open kitchen; Good change of pace though personally, ordering healthy takes something away!

 

Village Green: American; Ridgewood; 36 Prospect St @ Dayton; 23/18/$56; 201-445-2914; Small Plates; BYO; Romantic setting; This place specializes in a tasting menu- 4, 5, and 7 course menus;  They do a la carte on Mon-Thurs only; 5 course is $55 a person and you get 3-4 items per course to choose from; Food is outstanding and certainly a ‘foodie’ mainstay. Smallish portions. Really cute cottage house interior – date friendly.

 

RUTHERFORD
 

Café Matisse: Eclectic; Rutherford; 167 Park Av @ Highland; 28/25/$66; 201-935-2995; Hidden gem; Extremely romantic; 3, 4, or 5 course meals, prix fixe- $60, $75 or $95 a person; Outdoor dining available; Top notch décor and service; Worth the splurge and it is BYO so you save on wine. Truly a great dining experience, Romantic. Menu selections are truly mouthwatering… mac n cheese with King Crab!

 

Village Gourmet: Eclectic; Rutherford; 73-75 Park Av @ Ridge; 21/16/$30; 201-438-9404; Unique setting- liquor store in the middle of this BYO establishment; Many dishes are blackened/ Cajun style; Steaks and swordfish stand out; Something for everyone- burgers to dumplings to pasta. Very inexpensive. Giant menu. Probably better for lunch or casual weekday dinner. Too many cuisines to choose from!  

 
SADDLE RIVER
 

Saddle River Inn: New American; Saddle River; 2 Barnstable Ct @ Saddle River Rd; 28/26/$58; 201-825-4016; High end elegance; Many French inspired dishes as well; Fancily prepared and presented masterpieces; Swiss born chef Hans Egg is the star; More affordable than you think as it is BYO; Perfect service; Spectacular setting; Only drawback is possibly serving sizes and the limited menu. Extremely romantic. Reservations a must.
